Wheelchairs, Integration, Regulations, and more

Construction of a wheelchair ramp is crucial for ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in various environments. Over the years, at Helder’s Concrete Cutting Company, we have seen several modifications to wheelchair ramps and customers having to remove the wheelchair ramp and replace it because of the wrong specifications or errors with building codes.

First, we want to take the time to highlight the importance of wheelchair ramps:These ramps are for accessibility for people with disabilities. It provides individuals with mobility impairments, including those who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters, to access buildings, sidewalks, or other elevated areas. Wheelchair ramps benefit not only those with permanent disabilities but also the aging population and individuals recovering from temporary injuries. They make it easier for people using walking aids, canes, or walker to navigate spaces safely. They are also used for evacuating individuals with disabilities safely from buildings during an emergency.

These ramps also give community integration, commercial and social benefits. Wheelchair ramps foster a move inclusive and diverse community. It sends a positive message advocating about the commitment to accessibility, making spaces welcoming for people of all abilities. Businesses and public spaces that are accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities, can attract a broader customer base. Socially responsible practices, such as providing wheelchairs accessibility can enhance a company’s reputation and community standing.

Many regions have accessibility regulations and standards in place, such as the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) in the United States. Constructing wheelchair ramps helps establishments comply with these regulations, avoiding legal issues and fostering an inclusive environment.

Helder’s Concrete Cutting Company, wants to keep you informed of the specifications for wheelchair ramps in the State of Florida. The code is based on ADA Standards for Accessible Design with additional requirements specific to the State of Florida. The last known update on these codes was on January 2022

Slope: Maximum slope is 1:12. This means that for every inch of vertical rise, there should be at least 12 inches of ramp length.

Width: The minimum clear width of a wheelchair ramp in Florida is usually 36 inches, allowing sufficient space for a wheelchair to navigate comfortably.

Landing: the landing is required at the top and bottom of each ramp and should provide a level area for the wheelchair users to maneuver. The minimum size of a landing is typically 60 inches by 60 inches.

Handrails: These are required on both sides of a wheel chair ramp if the ramp has a rise greater than 6 inches or a horizontal projection greater than 72 inches. Handrails must meet specific height and gripping requirements.

Edge Protection: Wheelchair ramps should have edge protection, such as curbs or railings, to prevent users from accidentally rolling off the sides.Surfaces: The surface of the ramp should be stable, firm and slip resistant.

Clear Space: Adequate clear space should be provided at the top and bottom of the ramp to allow for maneuvering. This includes ensuring that there are no obstacles in the path of travel.

Transitions: Where the ramp meets the sidewalk or other surfaces, smooth transitions are important to avoid tripping hazards.

Signage: Accessibility signage may be required to indicate the presence of the wheelchair ramp and guide users.

Overall the specific requirements may vary based on the context and local codes. Additionally, for public projects, the ADA standards and federal regulations may also apply.
